Pandan: The Vibrant Heart of Vietnamese Desserts

Updated: May 23, 2023

If you've ever found yourself in our café, enchanted by the aromatic and subtly sweet flavours of our traditional Vietnamese desserts, then it's likely you've xperienced the magic of Pandan. This humble leafy plant, with its distinctive taste and vibrant green colour, has a significant role in the deliciousness of our offerings.

The Origins of Pandan

Pandan, also known as Screwpine in English, hails from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. Pandanus amaryllifolius is a staple in many Asian cuisines, but it has carved out a unique niche in Vietnamese culinary traditions. It's been a part of our culture and kitchen for centuries and is an integral ingredient in many of our dishes, especially our desserts.

The Benefits of Pandan

Pandan is not just about taste and colour; it also brings many health benefits. Rich in Essential Nutrients: Pandan leaves are rich in essential nutrients like calcium, iron, vitamins A and C, and fibre.

Antioxidant Powerhouse: The leaves are packed with antioxidants, which help fight off harmful free radicals in the body, potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

Natural Deodorizer: Traditionally, Pandan leaves have been used as a natural air

freshener due to their pleasant, sweet aroma.

Digestive Aid: In traditional medicine, Pandan has been used to alleviate digestive

problems like bloating and stomach cramps.

Pandan on Our Menu

Our desserts are crafted with care, love, and a great touch of Pandan. Here are two of our signature dishes that beautifully encapsulate the essence of this marvellous ingredient:

Chè Nhỏ: This decadent dessert is a beautiful medley of textures and flavours. At its heart are the delicate Pandan Jelly and Coconut Jelly, their subtle sweetness perfectly complementing the heartiness of red beans and the tropical notes of jackfruit. The bright red rubies add a delightful crunch, while the shaved ice, renched in rich coconut milk, cools your palate. A sprinkle of peanuts on top adds the perfect nutty finish. With every spoonful, Chè Nhỏ promises a unique, refreshing, and genuinely Vietnamese experience.

Tàu Hũ Bánh Lọt: This is a dessert that celebrates the depth and versatility of Pandan. The star of this dish is the Pandan cendol, its sweet, grassy notes laying off wonderfully against the creaminess of our in-house made silky tofu. The handmade clear pearls add another layer of texture with their soft hewiness. But the actual game changer is the ginger-infused shaved ice - a refreshing and spicy counterpart to the gentle sweetness of the rest of the dish. Topped with a generous pour of coconut

milk, Tàu Hũ Bánh Lọt is a symphony of flavours and textures that sings a sweet, soothing lullaby to your taste buds. At our café, we believe that every dessert tells a story, and Pandan is the vibrant thread that weaves these stories together. We invite you to immerse yourself in these stories, one dessert at a time. Taste the magic of Pandan at our café!
